Thyroid Related Eye Disease

Thyroid eye disease is also called Graves’ eye disease. This is an autoimmune condition that causes excessive amounts of thyroid hormones to be secreted. The eye muscles and connective tissues in the eye sockets are often attacked which may cause damage to the cornea and optic nerve.

Symptoms of Thyroid Eye Disease

  • Bulging eyes
  • Eyelid retraction
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Eyelid retraction
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Eye pain
  • Double vision
  • Dry or itchy eyes
  • Vision loss

Treatment for thyroid eye disease will depend on how the disease is affecting your vision. In addition to controlling your overactive thyroid gland through your regular physician, you will need treatments to protect your cornea and keep your vision stable.
