Misdirected / Abnormal Eyelashes

What are misdirected eyelashes?

Misdirected eyelashes are any eyelashes that grow toward the eye (trichiasis) or from the meibomian glands in the eye (distichiasis), resulting in double rows of eyelashes. Misdirected eyelashes can be caused by:

  • Inward-turned eyelid (entropion)
  • Infection
  • Trauma
  • Eyelid growth or cancer
  • Genetics

Treatment for misdirected eyelashes

Misdirected eyelashes can cause great discomfort and even impede vision. Dr. Daniel Sines, our resident oculoplastic surgeon, will examine the eye and determine the best treatment method, which may include:

  • Simple removal of the lash with tweezers
  • Hyfrecation and Cryotherapy
  • Eyelid surgery to correct an inward-turned eyelid
