Eyelid Malpositions

Eyelid malposition is the general term that describes any type of eyelid problem that can affect your vision and the surface of your eyes. At BoozmanHof, we offer treatment for:

  • Turned in eyelid (entropion): to reduce the occurrence of the eyelashes rubbing the cornea and causing infection or scarring.
  • Turned out eyelid (ectropion): to protect the eyes from overexposure and reduce eye irritation and dryness.
  • Eyelid retraction: to allow the eyelids to close properly. A weight implanted inside the eyelid may help the eyelid close.
  • Droopy eyelids (ptosis): to improve the appearance of the eyes and improve vision in patients where eyelid skin is interrupting the visual field.

Treatment: Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Dr. Daniel Sines performs eyelid surgery to remove excess or loose eyelid skin and reduce prominent fat pads. Also called blepharoplasty, this is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed to create a more alert and youthful appearance and help improve visual field.

Eyelid Growths

Growths on the upper or lower eyelids – even small ones – can not only be unattractive; they can also interfere with vision and could even be life-threatening if they are found to be cancerous. Dr. Sines, our oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon, is specially trained to:

  • Remove eyelid lesions for biopsy
  • Treat or remove eyelid styes
  • Eyelid reconstruction following Mohs surgery (surgery to treat skin cancer)

Eyelid growth treatments:
Dr. Sines’ treatments help patients achieve the best results possible for the eye’s structure, function and aesthetic appearance. If you have an eyelid growth, schedule an eye exam and have Dr. Sines evaluate your condition and recommend treatment options.

Orbital Surgery and Repairs

The orbit of your eye (the eye socket) is the bony cavity that houses the eye. If the eye socket becomes injured or damaged, you will most likely experience pain, impaired vision and possibly a sunken eye appearance.

Causes of eye socket problems:

  • Graves’ Disease
  • Tumors of the orbit or eye
  • Eye socket fractures
  • Inflammatory and infectious conditions

Treatments for eye socket problems:
Dr. Daniel Sines is an oculoplastic surgeon who can diagnose and treat eye socket problems. Treatment may include:

  • Removal of blind/painful eyes
  • Removal and biopsy of tumors
  • Reconstruction of excision site
Misdirected / Abnormal Eyelashes

Misdirected eyelashes are any eyelashes that grow toward the eye (trichiasis) or from the meibomian glands in the eye (distichiasis), resulting in double rows of eyelashes. Misdirected eyelashes can be caused by:

  • Inward-turned eyelid (entropion)
  • Infection
  • Trauma
  • Eyelid growth or cancer
  • Genetics

Treatment for misdirected eyelashes:
Misdirected eyelashes can cause great discomfort and even impede vision. Dr. Daniel Sines, our resident oculoplastic surgeon, will examine the eye and determine the best treatment method, which may include:

  • Simple removal of the lash with tweezers
  • Hyfrecation and Cryotherapy
  • Eyelid surgery to correct an inward-turned eyelid
Watery Eyes / Excessive Tearing

Watery eyes (epiphora) are a condition in which there is an overflow or overproduction of tears onto the face. This occurs when there is either an overproduction of tears or insufficient tear drainage from the eye or eyes.

Causes of watery eyes:

  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Medications
  • Blocked tear drain passages
  • Allergies
  • Poor eyelid function
  • Infections
  • Misdirected eyelashes
  • Nasal or facial fractures
  • Old punctual plug placement

Treatment of watery eyes:
In order to effectively treat watering eyes, Dr. Daniel Sines will evaluate your condition and determine the underlying cause. By properly diagnosing the problem, he can recommend treatment options to improve tear duct drainage such as:

  • Medicated eye drops
  • Artificial tears
  • Tear duct surgery (dacryocystorhinostomy or DCR)
  • Jones Tube placement
  • Tear duct stents
  • Correction of eyelid function problems
